It’s no secret that technology consumers are currently ramping up their online connectivity. The Internet of Things (IoT), video streaming, and throughput for servers and storage have hugely increased bandwidth demands in data centers. At the same time, as bandwidth demands increase, data centers need to become even more creative in boosting their energy efficiency. Based on years of data center expertise, we’ve found four innovative solutions to more efficiently power your data center.
Switch to “standby” servers that power down when they’re not in use
We’re familiar with the data center that runs servers constantly, which not only wastes power but also heats up the data center. This hot data center, in turn, requires the use of high-powered air conditioning. Instead, modern data centers are replacing older servers with servers equipped with standby mode. When not in use, these servers power down, requiring a fraction of the electricity needed by traditional servers and keeping the data center cool overall.
Implement Retro-Commissioning procedures at your data center space
The physical spaces that house data centers may not be updated to incorporate modern cooling and energy efficiency. But that doesn’t always mean that you should move your data center. Instead, implement Retro-Commissioning techniques that make your existing space conserve more energy. A few sample upgrades might include tuning your floor tile airflow, eliminating your electric reheat, or turning off your humidification devices.
Reorganize your data center space into a Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle Layout
Many data centers are arranged so that server racks in rows are placed in front of other server racks, row by row. However, this common arrangement can be energy inefficient, and cooling problems may arise. Instead, smart data centers arrange their server racks so that the fronts of servers face one another and, likewise, the backs of server racks face one another. As such, your data center will have a hot aisle/cold aisle rack configuration that increases your energy efficiency.
Replace your air conditioning system with air treatment systems
Air conditioning systems can use a lot of energy. Instead, replace this system with air treatment systems. The vent system is arranged to use natural currents for heating and cooling. One system pulls hot air out of your data center and uses it to heat the rest of the building. The second system then pulls cool air from underground. This second vent cools the data center, while fans move the cool air back to chill the servers.
